Voter turnout will increase if many candidates compete – Dr. Shaheed

Chief Spokesperson of opposition Alliance as well as former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that the voter turnout in the forthcoming presidential elections would increase if the number of candidates competing in the election increase. He said increase in number of voters is not something President Gayoom’s camp would like. Dr.Shaheed made the statement to Miadhu Daily when asked whether a single candidate by the opposition or as many opposition candidates as possible is the best option to defeat President Gayoom in the forthcoming elections.

“If the there are many candidates competing then the voter turnout would increase, now it will not benefit President Gayoom, I am confident President Gayoom will not get the majority, actually there is no way he can win, how can a person is who carrying the luggage of 30 years compete with young people of today” said Dr. Shaheed.

Dr. Shaheed further said that government actions now indicate that they have accepted defeat. He said it is clearly indicated by the apparent disregard to the Civil service Act, roadmap and government’s unwillingness to free the media as well as its unwillingness to hold elections within frame work of the reform agenda.

Dr. Shaheed argued that President Gayoom will not stand to gain anything if there are many candidates running in the elections or even if the number of votes gets divided. He said in the second stage of the elections, all other candidates except President Gayoom will be allied.

“President Gayoom will not gain anything even if there are many candidates” Dr. Shaheed.

At a news conference held by DRP the party’s Chief Spokesperson had said that the party was concerned with the opposition Alliance intention to bring out a single candidate

Former Chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has said that it would be difficult to defeat President Gayoom in the forthcoming presidential elections unless the opposition Alliance brings out a single candidate.
