Selling vote means loss of freedom – Deen

Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Waheedhuhdheen speaking at the official ceremony held to mark the Youth Day at Dhangehthi has said that even though youths above 18 years can vote this year, if they sell vote in any form then it will be the day they lose their freedom.

“This year all youths above 18 years have the opportunity to vote, I would like to remind all youths of the country is not sell their vote in any form, you must remember not sell your vote for any form of benefit like for money, to get medical care, to obtain further education or to get your house repaired, the day you sell your vote is the day you lose your freedom, when we face democratic principles that are new to us, we will be faced with different scenarios, we have to think differently” said Youth Minister.

Youth Minister Waheedhudheen also said that as the newly introduced democratic principles get strengthened we must also have capable and enthusiastic young people to lead the country. He said failure to do so would be detrimental to the continued progress of the nation. He also said that this must be remembered and fully understood by all the young people of Maldives.

Minister Waheedhuhdheen also revealed that seminars aimed at providing information on the country’s proud history and information on the services of the country’s heroes and heroines will be conducted. He said the seminars are held jointly by the Ministry and other government agencies and is targeted at youths. He said the seminar’s objective is to help develop the spirit of nationality among the youths of today and through them future generations of youth as well.

Youth Minister noted that the biggest challenge faced with youths today is drug abuse. He stressed on the importance of having safe houses needed for the proper care of recovering addicts. He said this is a matter of national concern.

“We must think deeply about this issue, we want to take care of these young people, and the best way to do so is to create a separate environment for them”.
