Presidential Address; repeated stories

Opposition members of the People’s Majlis have claimed that the Presidential Address delivered by the President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom during the inaugural sitting of the Majlis for 2008 are stories that have repeated in every Presidential Address for the last 30 years.

Speaking at the debate time opened to discuss points to be included in the report to be provided as response to Presidential Address opposition members said that as in previous years the presidential address makes empty promises to the people and is aimed at sustaining President Gayoom’s hold on power.

Speaking during the debate time, MP for Addu Atoll as well as member of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) Parliamentary Group Ibrahim Shareef ( Mavota Shareef) stated that the Presidential Address portrays current situation in the country as it addresses the people’s needs. He further said if the things said in Address is fulfilled then it would be beneficial to the country.

MP for Meemu Atoll as well as member of DRP Parliamentary Group Aneesa Ahmed said that she was satisfied as the Address takes in to consideration the response provided by the Majlis to the Presidential Address of 2007.

“This Presidential Address gives us the assurance that those tsunami victims that have not received permanent shelters will be provided with permanent shelters before the end next year. The Address state that training resorts will be set up so that youths of this country can further their skills and enhance their knowledge in tourism related areas. The address also state that National Center to provide vocational education will be set up, this is an encouragement to the youths of the country” said Aneesa.

MP for Male’ as well as leader of Liberal Party (LP) Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) said the Presidential Address does not mention anything on the present status of the country nor any policy directions on the country’s next targets in the international arena. Ibra pointed out that the government has failed 100% in its attempt to provide permanent shelters to the tsunami victim. He also said the issue of drug abuse in the country was a matter that was being repeated like counting beads.

Raa Atoll Member Shaheed Zaki said going through the Presidential Address, one can see the policies of the government was repeated for the last 29 years. He said that Presidential Address does not contain any policy that suit present day condition of the nation. He said it was comforting to see that the government has apologized for the unfulfilled promises made to the people.

At the sitting of the Majlis a 4 member ad hoc committee was formed to prepare the Majlis response to the Presidential Address. The committee proposed by Gdh Atoll Member Abbas Ibrahim and seconded by Ga Member Abdulla Jabir include Male’ Member Mohamed Shihab, Alif Alif Atoll Member Hussain Mohamed, South Miladhunmadulu member Ali Mohamed and Mohamed Saleem President’s Member.
