President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Dr. Mohamed Munnawar has said that party was gearing up for the elections that would be held under the new constitution this year.
Speaking at a news conference held at the MDP Office last Thursday Dr. Munnawar said that the party was getting prepared for the presidential elections, parliamentary elections and Atoll and Island Council elections. According to Dr. Munnawar Atoll and Island Council elections should be held first. He said such a procedure will pave the way for free and fair elections as desired by the people.
“We are fully aware of the role played by Atoll Chiefs and Island Chiefs and other island officials in these elections, that is shape the elections in line with government policy, so, in order to have free and fair elections we have to free the people from these shackles. So it is imperative that Island and Atoll council elections are held first, so that people can elect their true representatives to atoll and island offices, surely then the government influence on the elections that is to follow will not be there” said Dr. Munnawar.
Providing further information on the forthcoming elections Dr. Munnawar said 9 candidates has come forward to represent MDP in the parliamentary elections. He said this include present MDP Special Majlis Members as well as People’s Majlis Members.
“We will start necessary campaigning when enough candidates come forward for Island and Atoll Councils, we will start parliamentary campaigning when procedures on selecting party candidates are established, this is being discussed in the National Council “ said MDP President Dr. Munnawar.
