MDP Parliamentary Group Member Husnu Al Suood has said that in order to defeat President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in forthcoming presidential elections as many candidates as possible must compete. Speaking to Miadhu Daily Husnu Al Suood said that he cannot support the single candidate theory as believed by some Alliance leaders. Suood said he has good reasons to believe that the single candidate theory would not work out.
“I do not support this single candidate theory, there are many reasons for it, the way the new constitution is drafted if none of the candidates receives 51 % support then the election will advance to second stage, the second stage allows two candidates with the most number of votes to compete, at this stage we shall see what we want, we will know who is popular among us” said Suood.
In addition Suood said if many candidates compete then it would be easy to defeat President Gayoom and that even Adhaalath Party should join the presidential race.
“Many candidates should compete, even atoll dignitaries can compete, Adhaalath too should join the race” said Suood.
In addition Suood said no body was considering the second stage of the election and that it would much easier to fail President Gayoom in the first round if many candidates compete.
“Nobody is talking about the second stage of the elections, If President Gayoom does not get 51% in the first round then he is out of the race, but it can only be done if many candidates join the race” said Sauood.
He further said by just bringing out a candidate to represent the Alliance is no guarantee that the people will accept it. As such it is best that as many candidates as possible compete in the presidential elections.
Despite Husnu Al Suood’s views on the matter many opposition leaders believe the best way to defeat President Gayoom is to bring out a single candidate
