Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) has raised concerns over the Alliance intentions to bring out a single candidate. DRP revealed this at a news conference held by the party.
Speaking at news conference held at DRP’s office Chief Spokesperson of the party Ibrahim Shafiu said that DRP was alarmed at the opposition Alliance intention to bring out a single candidate to compete against President Gayoom in the forthcoming presidential elections. Shafiu said it violates the principles of presidential system adopted by the Majlis.
“People join political parties because they believe in the leadership of that party and also because they accept and believe in the polices of that party; the party’s president or chairman is elected by general members through a mechanism adopted by the party; as such a leader of a party does not have the right to hand over the leadership of that party without the consent and approval of the general members; opposition leaders of the Alliance are trying to choose a leader without the approval of common members; one of the main objectives of a political party is to compete in the elections and obtain the power to rule, this should be done not because a specific group of people have personal agenda” said Shafiu speaking at the news conference.
Miadhu Daily contacted Chief Spokesperson of the opposition Alliance Dr. Shaheed to obtain his views on the matter. Dr. Shaheed said DRP should refrain from misleading and cheating the people of this country. He said President Gayoom, DRP’s leader has been doing it for last 30 years.
“Parties forming the Alliance is electing a candidate according to the mandate given by the members, there are ways established by the party that stipulate how these things can be done, even though Alliance elect a candidate that person still needs to get more than 50 % votes in favor” said Dr. Shaheed.
Dr. Shaheed further said “how did Indian Congress Party get Dr.Manmohan Singh? Does DRP not accept Dr. Manmohan Singh as a democratic leader? So this is certainly not against democratic principles, all over the world whenever a dictator is brought down there has always been an Alliance”.
