Speaker of the People’s Majlis Ahmed Zahir has said that work of the Majlis during the current session is making significant progress. He made the statement in his opening remarks of the Majlis scheduled yesterday morning. His statements were in response to allegations that Majlis committees were inactive and not carrying out their work
Speaker revealed that from March 2 to March 16, 34 meetings of various Majlis committees were held and only one meeting was cancelled due to lack of quorum. He noted that 2 Majlis sessions were not held as scheduled. Speaker revealed that 3 trips were made by the committees with regard to their work to the atolls and that as of yesterday work of 5 bills were completed by the committees and submitted to the majlis.
Speaker said first reading of 12 bills has been carried out. He said these include 6 bills submitted by the government and 6 bills proposed by members.
At yesterday’s sitting was the continuation of the plenary debate on the second reading of the bill on amendment to the civil service act. 14 members including Minister of Legal Reform, Information and Arts Mohamed Nasheed also spoke on the subject. Yesterday’s sitting attended by 42 members.
