Former Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed has said that international community has no confidence that the presidential elections to be held later this year will be free and fair.
Answering a question from Miadhu Daily Dr. Shaheed said that the international community does not believe that the presidential elections to be held later this year will be free and fair. In this regard he pointed out a statement of Robert Evans a leading European Parliamentarian posted on U tube.com.
“This is clearly indicated by the statement posted on U tube .com by Robert Evans a leading European Parliamentarian. According to Robert Evans Maldives presidential election will be more like an election in Pakistan. Maldives too have a leader like in Pakistan. To say the election will be similar to an election like in Pakistan means a lot” said Dr. Shaheed.
Dr. Shaheed further said that the international community is fully aware that the best opportunity to introduce a modern democracy to the country is a thing of the past. President Gayoom’s credibility is lost when he failed to introduce a modern democracy 4 years ago as he promised.
“The best opportunity to introduce a modern democracy to Maldives has been lost, it should have been done 4 years ago, the international community is fully aware of this” said Dr. Shaheed.
Dr. Shaheed further said that team from UN expected to arrive since last year has not arrived because they believe it will waste of their time.
Due to Dr. Shaheed’s comment’s Miadhu Daily contacted Lubna Zahir Member of Parliament as well as President of DRP’s Women Branch. According to Lubna there is no reason why such an election cannot be held in Maldives and said she is surprised when important people like Robert Evans makes such conclusions after only listening to specific people.
“There is no reason why such an election cannot be held in this country, I am not taking any sides when I say that we can have fair and free elections, it is surprising when important MP’s like Robert Evans reach such conclusions after only listening to specific parties” said Lubna.
Government on many occasions has said it would do every thing to make the forthcoming presidential elections free and fair.
