Difference of opinion among Unity Alliance

Dr. Shaheed says liberal, Umar says Islamic
Former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed has said that principles of liberal democracy is viable option in Maldives and will easily blend with our way of life. Dr. Shaheed made the statement to Miadhu Daily when asked to comment on the views of some political analysts that Maldives and liberal democracy will not go hand in hand.

According to Dr. Shaheed some people are confused as what a liberal democracy means and what it stands for. He said liberal democracy can be introduced to Maldives within the boundaries and in accordance with the principles of Islam.

“Some people do not really understand what liberal democracy means, there is absolutely no reason why liberal democracy can’t work in this country, when we say liberal democracy we means majority rules, but the majority does not have the right to take away the rights of the minority. Libral democracy can be introduced to Maldives within the boundaries and in accordance with the principles of Islam” said Dr. Shaheed.

In addition Dr. Shaheed said Islamic principles do not conflict with the principles of liberal democracy and as that even he do not support introduction of other religions to Maldives.

“Islam does not prevent introduction of liberal democracy to Maldives, we too do not want to bring other Maldives to Maldives. Liberal Democracy is a democracy which protects human rights, protection of human rights is not something that goes against ones code of conduct” said Dr. Shaheed.

The views of Umar Naseer the President of Islamic Democratic Party (IDP) on liberal democracy is very different. According to Umar Naseer liberal democracy should not be introduced to a 100% Islamic State like Maldives. He says the Islamic democracy is what suits Maldives best.

“That is something we differ, we should introduce liberal democracy here, we should be talking about Islamic democracy” said Umar.

In addition Umar said even in the dictionary the meaning of liberal include freedom of religion and as such liberal democracy must not be introduced to Maldives.

“Meaning of liberal in the dictionary include freedom of religion, while liberal permits people to believe and practice any religion they want, then that kind of democracy should never be introduce to Maldives” said Umar.

To obtain the views of Adhaalath Party Miadhu Daily contacted Sheikh Hussain Rasheed. According to Sheikh Hussain Rasheed democracy can never be brought to Maldives under President Gayoom. He said democracy can only be introduced without President Gayoom.

In addition many political analysts believe that liberal democracy does not go hand in hand with a 100% Islamic state like Maldives. They under liberal democracy a person can practice any religion he wants. They also say there is no Islamic nation with liberal democracy and that liberal democracy is alien to Islamic culture.
