Anni gears up for MDP primaries

Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) former Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has launched his campaign to win the presidential primaries of MDP yesterday night.

The campaign launched under the slogan “towards a better life” commenced yesterday night at Kalaafaanu School. Addressing his supporters Anni talked about the main areas of reform under an MDP government led by him. He talked about providing better welfare packages to the elderly and providing better facilities to improve the general living conditions in the atolls.

Anni urged all his supporters to refrain from defaming or slandering his opponents and said that this campaign should not be the cause of any divisions within the party. He went on to say that if any member commits such a thing then that person will not be considered as a supporter.

As usual Anni attacked President Gayoom’s leadership and said that he was willing to make any sacrifice to topple President Gayoom from power.

Speaking at Kalaafaanu School Anni also promised that he will not let the party go astray and that he will lead the party to safer shores.

“I will not let the party go astray, I will lead it to safer shores and it is something which I am committed to “Anni said.

Anni yesterday night also talked about his views on bringing out a single candidate to compete against President Gayoom. He pointed out that unless opposition parties stick together and bring out a single candidate it will be difficult to achieve the objective.

“I believe that we should have a single candidate to defeat President Gayoom, I am sure that it will weaken our stand if have different candidates” said Anni.

Some of Annis supporters also spoke last night, although few members said they were supporting Anni. The main point raised by those who spoke last night was that the campaign should not be allows to split the party. They urged all supporters not allow that to happen
