No use of parties if reform is not completed - Nazim

Ahmed Nazim Vice President of People’s Association (PA) has said that the objective of having political parties cannot be achieved if the ongoing constitutional reform process cannot be completed. He made the statement to Miadhu Daily when asked to comment on the delay of the Association’s proposed change to a political party. PA President Abdulla Yamin told Miadhu Daily last October that the party will soon emerge as a full political party.

“There is no need for political parties if the constitutional reform is not completed. As you know DRP has not shown any sign of a compromise” said Nazim who was instrumental in the formation of the DRP and who later quit DRP to form political association known as People’s Association.

When asked to provide comments on the views of some political analysts that PA will never emerge as full fledged political party and that it was mostly talks, Nazim replied that there is no doubt that the PA will soon emerge as a political party and to this end all administrative arrangements have been completed.

“There is no doubt that PA will emerge as full fledged political party, but we will proceed any further once the constitutional reform is completed, all administrative work has been completed, arrangements for focal points are in place, the only thing left is just to submit the application form” said Nazim.

PA came into existence because of the aspirations of the founders of the association to serve the nation and people and raise their living standards. Faster economic development and distribution of the wealth of the country on sound policies are major objectives of PA. Yamin who played a major role in the establishment of President Gayoom's Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party, DRP did not find it possible to work towards these goals within the ambit of DRP because of the wide differences and rivalry there, and Yamin ultimately formed PA which President Gayoom did not approve. Eventually Yamin and his influential colleagues including his Deputy Minister Ahmed Nazim and one of the financial supporters of DRP, Chairman of Mifco Abdullah Jabir resigned their jobs.
