Shafiu says Dr. Shaheed’s comment is a joke

Chief Spokesperson of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) has said that former Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed’s statements regarding the international community’s confidence on the free and fairness of the forthcoming presidential election was a good joke.

Responding to the Dr. Shaheed’s statement given to Miadhu Daily Shafiu said that there was absolutely no reason why an election that is to be held under the new constitution cannot be free and fair. He further said the recent public referendum on the system of government too was very free and fair as was indicated by the comments received from the international community. Shafiu pointed out that as such Dr. Shaheed’s statements were truly a big joke and does not make any sense.

“It is very funny, international community has said that the recent public referendum held on the system of government was free and fair, any way how can an election that will be held under the new constitution cannot be free and fair” Shafiu said.

Shafiu further said if Dr. Shaheed does accept that free and fair elections can be held under the new constitution after the all the necessary independent commissions and offices are established, then Dr. Shaheed does not believe in the constitution.

“If he does not believe that elections held under the new constitutions after all the necessary independent commissions and offices are established, cannot be free and fair , then he is a person who does not believe in the constitution” Chief Spokesperson Shafiu said.

Dr. Shaheed’s statements on international community’s lack of confidence is a reference made to a posting made on Utube .com of a statement of EU Parliamentarian Robert Evans and the delay of the proposed visit of UN team.

DRP’s Parliamentary Group Member Luba Zahir on the subject said that she was surprised that leading parliamentarians such as Robert Evans based their decisions on the arguments of one side. She also pointed out there is absolutely no reason why free fair and open elections cannot be held.
