Breaking News: Sp.Majlis passes vital articles of the transitional chapter

Special Majlis has passed important articles of the transitional chapter currently being considered at the Majlis. Special Majlis has passed to establish a 5 member elections commission within 30 days of the ratification of the revised constitution. The Elections Commission is to be proposed by the political parties and need to be endorsed by the Special Majlis. Further the Majlis also passed to establish an 8 member Judicial Services Commission.

Further the Majlis also passed to establish a Supreme Court comprising of 5 Judges within 45 days of the revised constitution coming into force. The Supreme Court is to be established with the advice of Judicial Services Commission. Majlis also endorsed to establish an Anti Corruption Commission within 60 days of the entry in to force of the revised constitution. Majlis today also passed to establish the Elections Commission, Supreme Court and the Judicial Services Commission that require to be established under the constitution within 60 days of holding the first session of the People’s Majlis elected under the revised constitution.

Before the break time, 21 articles were put to vote and 15 were passed. The first articles put to vote today, were articles on which members have agreed upon at unofficial sessions. It must be noted that the articles passed with the full support of DRP members were articles which makes reference to “this constitution.

Majlis today was attended by 100 members. Some members raised points of orders. Although security around the Majlis is tight, many members of the general public attended to witness the proceedings.

According to Maldives Police Services, one person was arrested near the Majlis house for disobedience and attempting to barge in to area cordoned off by the Police. Police informs the matter is being investigated.
