DRP Say Elections Should Be Held Before Presidential Term Ends

The ruling Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) has said that President Gayoom should not continue in power after his term ends, even though it is constitutionally sound, unless he is re-elected.

Speaking a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Saturday, Aneesa Ahmed said: “DRP does not want the current president to remain [after his term ends] without being endorsed again”.

The country’s first multi-party presidential elections should be held before November 11th 2008, she said, so that DRP’s party leader can compete against opposition contenders.
