Dr. Munavvar not in favor of voting by proxy

Dr. Mohamed Munavvar President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) competing in the party presidential primary has said that he is not in favor of voting by proxy. Dr. Munavvar said the voting by proxy violates the principles of voting and is against the spirit of voting.

At a primary campaign address given at Hdh Kulhudhuhfushi last night Dr. Munavvar said he will not make use of any proxy votes despite other two candidates competing in the primary doing so. He said as the MDP reformists are people with high awareness on politics, their actions must confirm what they say. In this regard he said all members should come out and vote on their own free will.

“What we are saying is that every body has the right to vote, that is one of the very basic rights, but that right have to exercised without the influence of any other party” said Dr. Munavvar in pointing out that this example should be followed by the general public.

In addition Dr. Munavvar said that although Maldives posses a proud history and a rich culture President Gayoom in his 30 year long rule have kept it hidden from the people. He said most Maldivians nowadays are not aware of what it means to be a Maldivian nor are they aware of what the country’s heroes and heroines. He said this one of the few country’s in the world which was not colonized and that the country has a proud history that all Maldivians can be proud of.

“Even though we were under the Portuguese rule for a little while, there were heroes that saved the country, just as others were defend to the country when other foreign sources tried to take our the sovereignty of the country, if we are not aware of such things then what Maldivinisim is there among us” said Dr. Munavvar.

Dr. Munavvar also said that Maldivians have an identity of their own, something they can be proud of. In this regard he said most young men and women today are more familiar with Hindhi or some other language than their very own mother tongue, Dhivehi.

The 2 two candidates competing in presidential primary are also holding campaign rallies in Male’ and in atolls. Apart from Dr. Munavvar the 2 candidates who are contesting the primaries are former chairperson Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) and Member of MDP Parliamentary Group as well as MP for Laamu Atoll Ricco Moosa Manik
