Yamin & Jabir still DRP members - Shafiu

Chief Spokesperson of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) Ibrahim Shafiu has said that Abdulla Yamin former Minister of Higher Education Employment and Labor as well as President Gayoom’s half brother and Abdulla Jabir former Chairman of Maldives Fisheries Industrial Company who were instrumental in the formation of DRP, who later broke away from DRP to form their own political association, People’s Association (PA) are still senior members of DRP. Shafiu made the statement in a special exclusive given to Miadhu Daily.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily Shafiu said that those members who formed PA have not yet resigned from the party and that they are still senior members of DRP. Shafiu said that those DRP members who formed PA only submitted a letter expressing their intention to resign from the party. He said under no circumstances have they offered their resignation and as such still remain as senior members of DRP.
“Those members who formed PA are still DRP members, their letter only expresses their intention to resign, they have not resigned as yet” said Shafiu.
In addition Shafiu revealed that as per party’s governing regulations, if any member disregards party policies and acts in a manner that would jeopardize party’s interests, then the membership of that particular member will be cancelled. He however pointed that those members who formed PA has neither supported any particular presidential candidate nor have they expressed their intention to compete in the presidential elections. He said as such these PA members cannot be considered to be working against the interests of DRP.
“As per the party governing procedures, if any member is found acting against party policies or party interests, then such a person will thrown out of the party, however PA members have not worked against DRP, they have not put forward their presidential candidate or have stated their interest to compete, they have not given support to any specific candidate, so one cannot consider these PA members to be working against DRP” said Shafiu.
When asked by Miadhu Daily that whether Abdulla Jabir and Abdull Yamin were still members of DRP, Shafiu replied in the affirmative. “Without a doubt they are both DRP members, they are senior members, even though they do not attend Council meetings we still invite them” said Shafiu. In addition he said they were important members of DRP. However according to information received to Miadhu Daily DRP do not send out invitations to these PA members any more. Miadhu Daily was unable to get a comment from these PA members to confirm the story.
