Majlis endorse Defense Bill

At the eleventh sitting of the first session of the Majlis held yesterday Defense Force Bill was passed with the full consensus of the Majlis. The Bill gives the defense personnel the right to vote and stipulates President of the county as its chief commander. The Bill stipulates penalties and punishments for Defense Force Personnel committing administrative offenses as well as other violations.

While some members has expressed their concern over the Bill, while members say the Bill will make the Defense Force independent. The Bill also stipulates the main responsibilities of the Defense Force as protection of the country’s sovereignty and the protection of the legally established government.

During the second reading of the reporting stage of the bill, 36 amendments were moved and seconded. When these amendments were put to vote 9 were approved.

At the third and the final stage of considering the Bill 11 members spoke on the subject and Minister of Defense and National Security Mr. Ismail Shafiu made final remarks on the Bill. After these interventions, the chair called for vote to pass the bill with the amendments passed during the second reading of the reporting stage. Finally the bill was passed by consensus.

At the beginning of yesterdays sitting, Minister of Construction and Public Infrastructure Mr. Mohamed Mauroof Jameel was asked parliamentary questions by South Nilandhe Atoll member Mr. Ahmed Nashid. The minister provided answers to the questions and to five other supplementary questions asked by other members.

At the conclusion of the question time Majlis also passed minutes of two sitting of the Majlis, i.e. nos. 1/2008 and 2/2008. Yesterday’s sitting was attended by 42 members and was chaired by speaker Ahmed Zahir. The next session of people Majlis will be held on Monday 7th April 2008.
