Chief Spokesperson of Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP) Ibrahim Shafiu has said that if the Leader of the Party Maumoon Abdul Gayoom decides not to compete in the forthcoming presidential elections then he shall have to step down as party leader. Shafiu made the statement to Miadhu Daily when asked about the claims of the opposition parties that President Gayoom despite repeatedly saying he will stand elections will opt not to do so at the last minute.
According to Shafiu if President Gayoom decides not stand elections then as per the party’s governing regulations he will have to stand down as party leader. “The Leader will compete, his thinking and actions are geared towards it, if for any reason he decides not to stand elections then as per the governing regulations of the party, he will have to step down as party leader” said Chief Spokesperson Shafiu.
In addition Shafiu said the responsibilities of the Leader include competing in presidential elections and that no other member of the party can compete in such elections. “DRP’s governing procedures stipulates that it is the responsibility of the Party leader to compete in presidential elections, it is a responsibility which lies with the leader only, if President Gayoom decides not to compete then he will have to stand down as party leader” said Shafiu.
Shafiu indicated that even though opposition parties claim that President Gayoom will opt not to seek re election, he is confident President Gayoom will stand election.
