DRP petition just delay tactics – Maria

Chief Spokesperson of MDP as well as MP for Kaafu Atoll Maria Ahmed Didi has stated that objective of the petition submitted to the Special Majlis by DRP on the issue of the draft transitional chapter was to further delay the completion of the ongoing constitutional reform process.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily last night Maria said the she believed that expediting the constitutional reform process was never a part of the DRP’s agenda. She said even after Majlis endorsement of article on term of presidency which states that no person shall remain as president for more than 2 five year terms, DRP members believes that President Gayoom can still stand re election.

DRP petition calls the Majlis to halt the ongoing work on the transitional chapter by the Drafting Panel and to establish the basic features of the transitional chapter as per article 24 of Majlis Standing Orders and instruct the Drafting Committee to re draft the transitional chapter based on those features as per article 27 of the Majlis Standing Orders.

“They were there when those basic features were determined, now it is pointless to ask to re establish those features, it is only a ploy to delay the reform process” said Maria.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily DRP Chief Spokesperson Ibrahim Shafiu said DRP has only called to establish the basic features by discussing it among members of the Drafting Committee. He said this was because Drafting Panel has taken into consideration the views of DRP members or proposals by DRP on the transitional chapter.

“The issue on the basic features surfaced due to the fact the Drafting Panel did not give any consideration to proposals submitted through the Majlis as well as to what was discussed in the Drafting Committee, the chapter must be based on basic features, we cannot accept a chapter that is drafted purely on views of the Chairman of the Drafting Committee or members of Panel” said Shafiu.

Speaker of the Special Majlis Qasim Ibrahim has asked to submit the transitional chapter by 13 of March but so far it was not done. Qasim has said if the Drafting Committee fails to submit the chapter by the 13 of March he would hold session of the Special Majlis on 23 of March in order to complete the chapter. However Chairman of the Drafting Committee Ibrahim Ismail has said the as the committee does not have full Drafting Panel it would be difficult to estimate when the chapter would be completed.
