Anni says opposition must unite behind a single candidate

Former Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has said that it would be difficult to compete with the Dhivehi Rahyithunge Party (DRP)’s candidate as well as the incumbent President of the country Maumoon Abdul Gayoom unless the opposition parties stand behind a common candidate. Anni made the statement speaking at campaign meeting held in Addu Atoll last Tuesday night.

“If the opposition parties cannot agree on a common candidate then it will be difficult to defeat President Gayoom. There is a big difference between what I saw when I visited the atolls with MDP last year and what I saw when I visited these islands with the Alliance recently. I have visited 26 islands with the Alliance, the support I received form the people was immense, there is support for MDP too, but with Alliance it is totally a new ball game, it is the kind of support we need to bring President Gayoom down” said Anni.

Anni further said that we should not let the opportunity to go to waste and that he believed that Alliance must be used to its maximum advantage. The three competing in the MDP presidential primaries all support the concept of a single candidate to represent the Alliance. However some of the presidential hopefuls of the Alliance now believe that President Gayoom can be defeated even without the Alliance. In this regard former Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed speaking on behalf of Dr. Hassan Saeed former Attorney General who has announced his presidential bid said that the current situation now is very different and that President Gayoom can be defeated even without the Alliance.

Anni at a press conference held in Feydhoo yesterday night had revealed his stand on the single candidate concept.

The other 2 candidates competing in MDP presidential primaries are MDP President Dr. Mohamed Munawar and Member of MDP Parliamentary Group Ricco Moosa Manik.
