Former Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has stated that he is ready to take charge of the transitional government to be established in order to reach the new constitution.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily Anni said if MDP wants him to assume the leadership of the transitional government he would be happy to do so and that he will always continue to act as per the demands of the party.
“If the party desires me to assume the leadership, without a doubt I would do it, party’s decision is my decision, if given the opportunity I am ready to take charge of the transitional government “said Anni. Anni resigned from MDP Chairpersonship in order to compete in the party presidential primaries.
Referring to media allegations of going back on his word ( that Anni has repeatedly said on various occasions that he was not interested in becoming the country’s president ) Anni said that what he always maintained was that he was working to topple President Gayoom from power and establish an MDP led government.
“I have repeatedly said I am working to topple Kibigasdhoshuge Maumoon Abdul Gayoom from power, we are working to establish an MDP led government, that is what I have always said” said Anni.
Even though the opposition parties talk about transitional government, members of ruling party DRP say that there is no chance for such a government. In this regard MP for Addu Atoll Ibrahim Shareef says that there is absolutely no chance for a transitional government and that even the Majlis cannot dissolve a legally elected government.
“There is no chance for a transitional government, DRP will not support such a concept” said MP Shareef.
Special Majlis will soon start consideration of the transitional chapter of the new constitution.
